1095 is often recommended as a beginner steel. We respectfully disagree. Heat treat of this steel is very finicky with a fine line between a blade that doesn't harden and a blade that cracks or breaks. 1095 can be a nice addition to damascus - and will take a nice hammon - both advanced skills.

It all depends on how it's made, and the heat treating. The combination is used because the15n20 has a high nickel content and really shows a dramatic contrast to the 1095. It should be a decent knife, I prefer using 1095 /L-6 when making damascus as they are both high carbon and I don't have to worry about carbon migration.
