How to Identify Rebar Grades | Hunker
Look at the rebar for a line running the length of the rebar between the outside ribs. This line is another type of grade mark. This mark, in addition to the markings above, identifies the rod as a grade 60 bar. This is the only mark differentiating a grade 40 bar from a grade 60 bar with the line system.

OT- #4 Rebar: Grade 40 or Grade 60 - Practical Machinist
We used to make aquaculture racks and frames from #4 rebar before we switched to plastic, and I've cut and bent tons (literally) of the stuff. My local steel supplier stopped carrying grade 40 because the Mass. building code was amended to require grade 60 in all construction.
